North West Tenerife Hidden Secrets Guided Tour with Transport

It's one pretty village after another on this exclusive tour in the rugged northwest of Tenerife. We'll drop in at a roll call of the island's must-visits. Christian, one of our local experts, says, ‘A guide shows you around the park in Icod de los Vinos and gives you the lowdown on its fascinating dragon tree, which is 20 metres tall.' Santiago del Teide, local speciality tasting and a trip to Teno Rural Park are also part of the line-up.You'll journey through Santiago del Teide, a highland village of whitewashed homes. In Icod de Los Vinos, you'll admire the centuries-old dragon tree, with some free time to wander around the town. Garachico – often called the ‘prettiest and unluckiest' – awaits with some interesting history. Devastated by a volcanic eruption in 1706 and rebuilt on its lava, it's now famous for natural lava pools, guarded by a volcanic rock castle, where locals and visitors alike come to bathe. When it's time to take a break, there's a tasty local lunch, served in a family-run restaurant in a traditional finca. Teno Rural Park showcases the island's rich biodiversity and is known as the source of Tenerife's top-quality natural produce. You'll even get to try some locally made marmalades and jams, all produced with a minimum carbon footprint. The ‘lost hamlet' of Masca is also on the cards, one of Tenerife's most eye-catching spots, dramatically perched on a ridge overlooking a valley.

Full Day Tenerife Tour with La Laguna and Lunch

Dusty and lunar-like in the south, green and mountainous in the north, Tenerife packs a continent into one island. Think quaint villages, stunning views and a local lunch on this full day experience. You'll visit the UNESCO-listed old town of La Laguna, drop into a bodega for lunch and explore an aloe vera plantation. Arianne, one of our local expert guides, says, ‘Canarian bananas are smaller but thicker, and their peel has dark speckles. The pulp is yellower, and it should be eaten riper, which makes it sweeter.'First up is a visit to an aloe vera plantation. Here, you'll learn about the healing qualities – especially skincare – of this crop. Then it's on to La Laguna, arguably the prettiest town on the island. Throw in its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it makes for a real gem of a stop. Wander its poker-straight streets of pastel-coloured palaces and colonial-era churches and convents, or stop for a coffee in one of the cool tree-lined plazas. Taste local products such as marmalade and cheese in the weekly market and admire the town's famous flower displays. It's then on to a family-run bodega for a typical Canarian lunch surrounded by vintage bottles and aged barrels. Tenerife is a medley of picture-postcard villages, high-octane viewpoints and otherworldly landscapes. And nowhere more so than in Teide National Park. On this full day tour, you'll wind your way up the slopes of Mount Teide volcano, where an optional cable car ride can take you to the summit. Juana, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Teide National Park and the surrounding Corona Forestal Nature Reserve together account for one third of Tenerife's land mass – the extent to which the volcano dominates our island is indescribable.'Dramatic volcanic landscapes await as you venture into Teide National Park to see the showstopper itself – the 3,700-metre Mount Teide. As you climb, you'll pass through four different climate zones, which create an ever-changing kaleidoscope of terrains, flora and fauna. And because of its geological importance, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Juana says, ‘The park boasts a variety of camera-grabbing landscapes. There's the scorched earth of the lava fields, the jagged rock formations of Roques de Garcia, the Mars-like badlands around Montaña Rajada and the pine forests of the Corona Forestal.'As an optional extra, you can avail of the cable car service to just below the summit of the volcano. From this altitude, weather permitting, you can enjoy head-spinning views over Tenerife and the rest of the Canary archipelago jutting up from the Atlantic. Things to do in Tenerife

An island of natural beauty, amazing sea life and great gastronomy, Tenerife – the largest of the Canary Islands – is jam-packed with activities to satisfy any traveller. It’s no wonder that it’s popular with lots of holidaymakers, including families, nature lovers and adventure seekers. Top six things to do in Tenerife 1. Visit Teide National Park This UNESCO-listed national park is home to one of the world’s highest volcanos, Mount Teide. At 3,718m above sea level, it can even be seen from many of the other Canary Islands. If you want to see the volcano up close, you can take a cable car up its slopes and admire the views over Tenerife and its neighbouring islands. Join a guided walking tour and discover hiking trails through the park’s otherworldly landscapes. Or choose a sunset tour and toast the sun going down before getting to know the night sky with some stargazing. 2. Spend the day at Siam Park or Loro Parque Thai-themed Siam Park is an ideal day out for families and thrill-seekers alike. It regularly features on lists of the world’s top waterparks, thanks to its huge selection of slides, rides and rapids. Loro Parque is one of the best ways to discover the secrets of the animal kingdom, thanks to specially adapted areas for each of the species that live there. A journey through the Animal Embassy gets you close to the action – there’s a huge parrot reserve with species from across the globe. Plus, you’ve got a range of shows, too – exotic birds, sea lions, dolphins and orcas are all in the line-up. This place is all about education, too, so you’re likely to learn a thing or two about wildlife and conservation during your unforgettable day out.3. Try wild whale and dolphin watching The waters surrounding Tenerife are home to many species of whales and dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales can be spotted year-round, while more than 20 other species make seasonal visits to a protected zone off the island’s southwest coast. Book one of the daily boat excursions departing from the south of the island for your chance to catch a glimpse of these creatures in their natural habitat. 4. Get out on the water If watersports are your thing, then Tenerife is the place for you. Here, you can try out surfing, jet-skiing, body-boarding, paddle-boarding and kayaking, to name but a few. And thanks to the island’s rich marine life, the diving and snorkelling scene is top-notch – turtles, rays and octopuses are regularly spotted around the shores. 5. Discover Tenerife’s foodie scene You can dive into the culinary culture of Tenerife with a gastronomic tour. From cheese tasting to vineyard visits, there are experiences to suit all tastes. Of course, you’ll find traditional Spanish food on offer, but there are also a few dishes unique to the Canaries that are worth trying, too. Keep an eye out for papas arrugadas con mojo – translating as wrinkled potatoes with spicy sauce, these potatoes are cooked in heavily salted water, causing them to shrink and giving them their unusual name. Mojo sauce has got a kick to it – so tread carefully if you’re not a fan of spice. 6. Make a stop in colonial old towns Dotted throughout the island, you’ll find history-steeped villages, towns and cities that deserve a detour. The capital, Santa Cruz, blends a mazy old town with a modern seafront scene. Nearby La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – thanks to its well-preserved colonial architecture – while La Orotava lines up pretty pastel-coloured townhouses. Speaking of easy-on-the-eye spots, Garachico’s whitewashed homes stand out against its black volcanic coastline, and tiny Masca is perched on a ridge overlooking a deep valley.
