Things to do in Seville's Cathedral

4.5/5 (190)

The cathedral of Seville, also known as the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede, is an important point of interest for those who choose Spain as a holiday destination. It is the world's largest Gothic cathedral and the third largest Christian temple after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. In 1987 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city. Its construction dates back to 1401 on the site of the former Great Mosque, of which the cathedral retains the Orange Tree Courtyard and the minaret, now known as the Giralda. Seville Cathedral was converted into a Christian church in 1248 when the city was conquered by Ferdinand III of Castile. It consists of 5 naves and 25 chapels, where you can admire the work of important Spanish painters.

"Let's make a Church where those who see its carvings think we're mad": thus did the city interpret the Canons of Seville in 1401 during the meetings in which it was decided that the city's old mosque should be demolished. Unknowingly, they were announcing the creation of this imposing architectural work. The exterior is characterized by an impressive set of reliefs. The name of the architect who designed it, however, is unknown.

The Seville Cathedral is made up of the Giralda tower, the Orange Tree Courtyard, the roofs, the Door of Forgiveness, the Door of Conception, the Door of Sticks, the Door of Bells, the Door of the Prince, the Door of Saint Michael, the Door of Assumption and the Door of Baptism.
