Why you’ll love this…
  • Walk along typical man-made water canals called levadas
  • Admire the Risco waterfall and the 25 Fontes lagoon
  • Spend time surrounded by nature
What to expect

“Levadas” are man-made irrigation canals built to provide water from the northern to the southern part of Madeira, where the climate is drier. The Levadas of do Rabaçal, Risco and 25 Fontes are part of this network of over 3000 kilometers of canals.

You will walk through the Rabaçal Valley, one of Mother Nature’s masterpieces in Madeira Island. Starting descending the Paul da Serra plateau, until you reach the Rabaçal guesthouse and the waterfall known as Risco. The trekking continues through the 25 Fontes Levada to a lagoon, located in the inferior part of a rock, from where the 25 fountains flow. Take your time to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and the surrounding nature.

The way back will be through an 800 meters tunnel, which leads the water to the south part of the island. During the 11 km of the levada, you will reach a maximum altitude of 1280 meters and a minimum of 975 meters.

Then it's on to Fanal, where some of the oldest Laurel trees on the island grow. Ruben says, ‘Madeira's laurel forests are the largest surviving area of primary laurisilva woods anywhere. Some of the trees are thought to be around 800 years old, and the ecosystem is largely intact. These forests host around 100 endemic species, and they are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.'Rumble past typical ‘poios' terraced farmland en route to Seixal beach for a swim.
