Things to do in Heraklion Archaeological Museum

4.5/5 (302)

Leaf through over 5000 years of Cretian history and Europe’s first advanced civilisation – the Minoans – at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. The museum holds an impressive status that warrants a visit and is a great way to understand the island. Explore the 27 different rooms and exhibits inside to learn about everyday life as a Minoan – from colourful murals and frescoes, detailed ceramics and clay pots to their favourite sports and games. You’ll even see something that looks like chess.

Explore the symbols and legends of the Minoan era, including the sacred double axe and the bull’s head. Look out for the museum’s most prominent exhibit too – the Phaistos Disc. Join in to speculate what it’s for. The hieroglyphic carvings and images are a mystery that has yet to be deciphered. Meet the Snake Goddesses statues, the ladies that hold snaked in both hands in traditional costume, as well as a selection of impressive jewellery, in particular the gold bee pendant. It’s a showstopper.

The museum spans from the Neolithic Ages to Roman times, so you’ll see sculptures, coins and inscriptions from Classical to Roman Crete, as well as a series of portraits of Roman emperors. For the full picture of Minoan civilisation, head to the nearby Minoan Knossos Palace.

Knossos Palace and Heraklion Guided Tour with Transport

'The Palace of Knossos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete because it's where Europe's first civilisation began,' says Veta, one of our guides. A born and bred local, she knows a thing or two about the legends and myths surrounding the island's most popular attraction. You'll spend the day watching history come to life as you tour the grounds of the palace, before crossing over to Heraklion for some free time in the capital.Once the hub of Crete's Minoan civilisation, Knossos Palace sits in the heart of what's considered to be Europe's oldest settlement. You'll enjoy a guided tour around its treasures, stopping by the throne room, royal apartments, frescoes and more. And with fast-track access, there's no waiting around in queues. It's then time to head to Heraklion, the island's capital. See the 17th-century Morozini Lions fountain and the 400-year-old Venetian Loggia – which is still the city hall – during a short guided walk around the city. We'll round the day off by taking you to the open markets for some free time. Poke around stalls laden with hand-made trinkets and fresh local produce or stop off for a coffee at a local café for some people watching. Other must-sees include the Koule Fortress and the Church of Agios Titos.

“Knossos Palace was interesting, but crowded and expectations should be set around how much there actually is to see. Entrance fee is only 15 Euros. The "tour" of Heraklion was more here is a fountain see you back here in a couple of hours. Description of trip also mentioned a market but this didn't really materialise. So trip did feel a bit expensive for what it was.”

“The tour guide was great but unfortunately the microphone/ear piece system did not work very well at all and we all gave up on using them so found it hard to hear what the guide was saying. On the whole I was underwhelmed by Knossos Palace anyway. The trip into Heraklion was much more enjoyable and the port castle/fortification was much more interesting.”

“Given incorrect pick up time. Meant I missed the only trip in English on offer that week. Joined the German version as I have a limited German vocabulary but guide had clearly not been briefed that I was a transfer. The tour of Knosses was amazing. Fortunately I new quite a bit about the history of the site, Loved the site and the interactive tablet provided. The on-site TUI team were great but I have received no apology or explanation as to why incorrect pick up time was on the documents.”
