At the heart of Herrenhausen Palace, the Royal Gardens – aka Herrenhauser Garten – are some of Europe’s finest. Brought to life by Electress Sophia of Hanover, these gardens are a snapshot of her passion for the outdoors. In true Baroque style, there’s a definite nod to Versailles, with inspiration from King Louis XIV. Expect things like massive water fountains, maze-like pathways framed with flowerbeds, perfectly manicured hedges and even a grotto dating back to 1671. The magic doesn’t stop there, though. Look out for special events like the International Fireworks Competition or evening light shows both of which give the gardens an extra splash of colour.
