Hanover’s Old Town, known locally as the Altstadt, is the perfect place to get to grips with the city’s traditional and trendy sides. Much of this area was destroyed during World War 2, so the decor feels like a random mix of traditional half-timbered houses and more modern Scandi-inspired architecture. Amongst all this, you’ve got a pair of Instagram-worthy churches to wander around, including the 800-year-old Kreuzkirche – the oldest of its kind in Hanover. The Old Town is also most famously known for its bar scene. 300 different spots are packed into the streets here. There are so many, in fact, the whole district’s playfully known as the longest bar in the world.
